Patients may be interested in taking part in a clinical trial, or may have a trial in mind. It is important to discuss the possible risks and benefits, in order for patients to determine if the clinical trial is right for them. Consider the below questions in discussions with patients:

  • What is the aim of the trial, and how will it help people?
  • How might this clinical trial affect the patient’s prognosis?
  • What are the possible side effects of this treatment?
  • How will the treatment affect your patient’s daily life?
  • How long is the trial expected to last, and how long will they have to take part?
  • What happens if they change their mind?
  • How much of their time will they need to give?
  • Will they have to be hospitalised?
  • Will they have to fill in questionnaires or keep a diary?
  • Will they need extra help from their family or friends?
  • How do they find out the results at the end of the trial?

Breast Cancer Foundation NZ holds a database of recruiting and pending trials in Australia and New Zealand that are regularly updated. Visit the database here.

If you are the principal investigator and would like to publish your trial on our database, please contact intouch@bcf.org.nz.
